Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has made a strong start at the Indian box office, earning Rs. 24.25 crore gross or USD 2.50 million on Sunday. With this, the film completed its opening weekend with a total collection of Rs. 69 crore gross or USD 7.15 million, which is equal to Rs. 56.75 crore nett in India. The strong performance has helped the film achieve a new milestone for Hollywood releases in the country.
According to early box office figures, The Odyssey has become the biggest opening weekend ever for a Hollywood non franchise film in India. It has gone past the previous record held by Oppenheimer, which collected Rs. 59 crore during its opening weekend in 2023. Among all Hollywood releases in India, The Odyssey now ranks in 8th place for the biggest opening weekends.
The film recorded healthy growth after its opening day. Collections increased by around 30 per cent on Saturday, showing strong audience interest. Although earnings dipped slightly on Sunday, this is considered a common trend for Hollywood films in India. The overall weekend performance remained strong and reflected consistent audience support.
Advance bookings for the weekdays have also remained encouraging, especially for premium formats such as IMAX. Industry reports suggest that the film could collect more than Rs. 10 crore on Monday, which would be another impressive result. If the film continues to perform well in the coming weeks, trade analysts believe it could move towards the Rs. 200 crore mark in India, provided it maintains steady collections similar to Oppenheimer.
A major reason behind the film’s success is the popularity of director Christopher Nolan among Indian audiences. Over the years, Nolan has built a loyal fan following in the country through films such as Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight and Oppenheimer. His films are widely discussed by cinema lovers, and many consider him one of the most respected filmmakers working today. His previous releases, including the re release of Interstellar, also received strong audience support in India.
Interestingly, The Odyssey belongs to a genre that has not traditionally been among the biggest performers at the Indian box office. Despite that, Christopher Nolan’s popularity has helped the film attract large audiences across the country.
