Steven Spielberg is returning to extraterrestrial science fiction with Disclosure Day, a film scheduled to release in Indian theatres on 12 June 2026 through Universal Pictures India, distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery. The project marks Spielberg’s first major return to the genre since War of the Worlds, released nearly two decades ago, and arrives after the success of The Fabelmans, which received multiple Academy Award nominations and won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes.
Often credited with shaping the modern blockbuster era, Spielberg has built a long career around films that combine spectacle with emotional storytelling. With Disclosure Day, he revisits themes that have appeared throughout his work, particularly humanity’s relationship with the unknown and the fear and fascination surrounding extraterrestrial life.
The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. It is written by David Koepp, who previously collaborated with Spielberg on films such as Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds. The film is produced by Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger under Amblin Entertainment.
The story follows a Kansas City meteorologist and a young whistleblower who uncover evidence of extraterrestrial contact. Their discovery forces them to confront a difficult choice between exposing the truth to the world or protecting a secret that could alter society on a global scale. The narrative appears to focus not only on alien life but also on questions of power, secrecy, and the consequences of withholding information from the public.
Speaking about the scale of the film, Spielberg described his intention to create a highly immersive theatrical experience. “I certainly thought that this story needed to have a couple of jet engines strapped onto it and that it needed to take the audience on a ride that would blow their hair back,” Spielberg says. “I wanted that to begin from the very first frame and conclude in a 20-minute finale that would bring everyone to a united epiphany about what has been happening in the world, what has been kept from us and what we now know.”
Actor Colman Domingo, who plays Hugo Wakefield, spoke about the deeper conflict at the center of the story and the tension surrounding hidden truths. “The movie hinges on the idea that a profound truth has been kept secret from the world, and the conflict of the movie is rooted in a disagreement over what we risk if this truth was made known,” Domingo says. “Complicating the debate is the fact that it has been kept secret for a very long time, and in that time, people have become even more invested in keeping that truth a secret because they are too invested in the lives and world they have built.”
With its focus on secrecy, public fear, and extraterrestrial discovery, Disclosure Day continues Spielberg’s long standing interest in stories that explore how ordinary people respond to extraordinary events. The film also reflects the continued popularity of science fiction narratives that examine humanity’s place in a larger and largely unknown universe.
