A new trailer for Whalefall has been released, giving viewers a first look at the upcoming survival thriller starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin. The film is based on the acclaimed 2023 novel of the same name by Daniel Kraus and follows a young man who finds himself in an extremely dangerous situation while searching for his late father.
Abrams plays Jay Gardiner, a young diver who travels into the waters off the Central Coast of California after the death of his father, played by Brolin. Jay is searching for his father’s remains when his dive takes a terrifying turn. He is suddenly swallowed by a massive sperm whale and finds himself trapped inside the animal.
With only one hour of oxygen remaining, Jay has very little time to figure out how to survive and escape. The trailer shows his desperate struggle as he tries to stay calm while facing a situation that seems almost impossible to overcome. As he fights to stay alive, Jay begins to understand that the lessons his father taught him could be important to his survival.
The story also focuses on the complicated relationship between Jay and his father. While Jay is dealing with the pain of losing him, the dangerous situation forces him to think about the things his father taught him and the memories they shared. His fight for survival therefore becomes closely connected to his relationship with his late father.
Brian Duffield has directed Whalefall and co written the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, who wrote the original novel. The film combines survival elements with an emotional family story, placing its central character in a situation where he must use his knowledge and determination to stay alive.
Along with Abrams and Brolin, the cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. The film is expected to bring the underwater survival story from Kraus’ novel to the big screen while focusing on Jay’s struggle against time.
Whalefall is scheduled to hit theaters on October 16. The new trailer sets up a tense story about survival, loss and a son’s attempt to escape an extraordinary situation while carrying the lessons of his father with him.
