Why Adrian Grenier didn’t return in The Devil Wears Prada 2

Director David Frankel reveals why Adrian Grenier’s cameo didn’t make it into The Devil Wears Prada 2, alongside other surprising cuts from the film.

The absence of Adrian Grenier in The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been one of the biggest talking points around the sequel, and now director David Frankel has finally explained why. Despite early discussions about bringing Grenier back, even if just for a brief cameo, the idea ultimately fell apart due to timing. Frankel revealed that production was already too far along, and with the film being completed less than a month before release, there simply wasn’t enough time to properly include his character.
Grenier, who originally played Nate, the boyfriend of Andy Sachs portrayed by Anne Hathaway, had been expected by many fans to make at least a small appearance. His absence feels even more noticeable given the return of major cast members including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.

Interestingly, Frankel hinted that there had been a specific idea for Nate’s cameo but chose not to reveal what it was, leaving fans to speculate about how the character might have fit into the updated story. Grenier himself admitted he was disappointed about being left out, though he handled the situation lightly, even poking fun at it in a self-aware Starbucks commercial.

His isn’t the only cameo that didn’t survive the final cut. Sydney Sweeney also reportedly filmed a short appearance as herself, playing a celebrity client in a scene designed to reintroduce Emily Blunt’s character. That sequence, however, was trimmed for pacing and structure, meaning her role never made it to the final version either.

The sequel itself has been a long time coming. For years, the team resisted the idea of revisiting the story, largely because the original film felt complete. It wasn’t until recently, after a reunion moment between the core cast sparked renewed interest, that a clear direction for a sequel finally emerged.

Even without every familiar face returning, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is shaping up to be a major nostalgic event, blending legacy characters with new additions, including a cameo from Lady Gaga. But the missing pieces, especially Nate, are a reminder that even the most anticipated reunions come with compromises behind the scenes.
