With Subedaar, director Suresh Triveni moves away from the urban settings of his earlier films and enters the rough terrain of the Indian heartland. The film places Anil Kapoor at the centre as Arjun Maurya, a decorated Army Subedaar who returns home after years of service, only to realise that the battles he fought at the border have followed him back into civilian life.

The story opens quietly. Two small-town boys dream about an airplane journey. Their innocent imagination soon turns into tragedy when one of them drowns in a water-filled crater left behind by illegal sand mining. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Many children in the area have died in similar pits, but the system continues to look the other way. This is the broken world Arjun Maurya returns to after leaving the army.

Set in small-town Madhya Pradesh, the film follows Maurya as he struggles to adjust to life outside the military. He is no longer a soldier on the battlefield but a father trying to repair his strained relationship with his daughter Shyama (Radhikka Madan). Their relationship forms the emotional core of the film. Their interactions are tense, shaped by years of distance, unresolved hurt and awkward attempts to reconnect.

At first Maurya tries to stay away from the corruption around him. But the situation slowly pulls him in. At the centre of the local criminal network is Babli Didi (Mona Singh), who runs the powerful sand mining mafia in the region. The enemy Maurya now faces is no longer across a border but within his own surroundings.

Running alongside Maurya’s story is Shyama’s own fight. Independent and strong-willed, she takes on bullies at her college in her own way. As father and daughter deal with similar forces from different directions, their personal struggles begin to merge with the larger conflict around them. The situation slowly builds towards a confrontation Maurya has tried hard to avoid.

Anil Kapoor is the film’s strongest pillar. He brings both physical presence and emotional depth to the role. His Arjun Maurya feels like a man shaped by years of discipline and military life. Kapoor plays the character with restraint rather than loud heroics. As the tension builds, the audience almost waits for the moment when the Subedaar finally loses his calm.

Shyama acts as an effective counterbalance. She is neither sentimental nor forgiving. Having grown up with an absent father, she carries anger and disappointment, and Radhikka Madan portrays these emotions without trying to soften them. At the same time, the role allows her to take charge of her surroundings and perform a few unexpected action moments with confidence.

Saurabh Shukla appears as Maurya’s friend Prabhakar, a steady presence who supports him during difficult moments. The supporting cast, including Aditya Rawal and Faisal Malik, adds some texture to the story, although their characters could have been explored more. Nana Patekar also makes a brief appearance as Maurya’s army colleague toward the end, leaving a strong impression with the line, “Hum retired hain, tired nahin.”

Mona Singh’s Babli Didi brings a sly edge to the story. However, the character has limited scope and could have been developed further. Even so, Singh gives the role a slightly eccentric tone that sets her apart from the usual crime boss.

Visually, the film captures the roughness of its setting well. The dusty landscapes and crowded small-town spaces make the environment feel tense and unpredictable. The film has its share of violence, but it avoids excessive gore and relies more on the situation to create tension.

Where Subedaar falters slightly is in balancing its themes. Triveni appears interested in exploring the psychological shift from soldier to civilian life. But the narrative often moves toward action-heavy confrontations with the local mafia. At times, the film feels caught between being a character-driven drama and a conventional action story.

Still, at its best, Subedaar reminds us that the real conflict is not just about fighting crime but about the inner struggle of a man who has spent most of his life defined by war.

Even when the story loses some focus, Anil Kapoor keeps the film grounded with a sincere and controlled performance. Subedaar may not fully resolve the tension between its emotional ambitions and its action elements, but it delivers enough strong moments to make the journey engaging.

Filmmaker Raaj Shaandilyaa has officially terminated his contractual arrangement with Balaji Motion Pictures, the film production arm of Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms. In a formal statement issued on Thursday, Shaandilyaa confirmed that he had exercised his contractual rights to end the association and had already issued a termination notice to Balaji Telefilms over two weeks ago.

According to the filmmaker, the production house has not initiated any civil legal proceedings challenging the termination during this period.

“If Balaji Telefilms believed it had any sustainable legal basis to challenge the termination, it was open to them to approach the appropriate civil court. No such proceedings have been initiated,” Shaandilyaa said in his statement.

The director further alleged that instead of pursuing civil remedies, attempts were being made to level criminal allegations against him, which he described as “exaggerated and baseless.”

“These accusations are wholly unfounded and appear to be nothing more than an attempt to intimidate and browbeat after having realised that there is no viable case to challenge the termination,” he stated.

Shaandilyaa maintained that he is confident about his legal position and will respond to any allegations through the appropriate legal channels.

Importantly for the trade, the filmmaker clarified that his upcoming project Bhagam Bhag 2 is unaffected by the dispute and continues to move forward as planned.

“It may also be clarified that the film Bhagam Bhag 2 is very much on track and the project will proceed as scheduled,” he said.

Shaandilyaa also urged members of the film and creative industry to take note of what he described as “pressure tactics” being employed in the situation and to draw their own conclusions when entering into future professional collaborations.

As of now, Balaji Telefilms has not publicly issued a response to the filmmaker’s statement.

I, Raaj Shaandilyaa, had, in accordance with my contractual rights, issued a notice

Speaking at the We The Women event, Ayesha reflected on a deeply personal incident from her teenage years when she was removed from a project just hours before filming began because of her body size. Her remarks have once again spotlighted the intense scrutiny women in the industry continue to endure.

Ayesha revealed that while she was in Class XII, she had been selected to appear as the second lead in a music video produced by T-Series. However, the opportunity was abruptly taken away the night before the shoot. According to her, she was told she was considered “fat,” leading to her replacement at the last minute. The experience, she admitted, left a lasting impact and reinforced the unrealistic beauty standards that young actors are often pressured to meet. Over time, she said, she has worked to build confidence in her own appearance, but the memory of that rejection remains significant.

Beyond the industry’s expectations, Ayesha spoke about the relentless sexualisation she faces online. She shared that even everyday clothing choices can trigger inappropriate comments on Instagram. Whether she wears a simple top or a skirt, she said she is met with criticism and objectifying remarks. The constant scrutiny forces her to think carefully before posting anything online. She described the emotional toll of navigating a space where self-expression is overshadowed by fear of harassment. While some days she feels empowered to post what she wants without hesitation, on other days she avoids sharing content altogether to protect her mental well-being.

More disturbingly, Ayesha disclosed that she receives rape threats regularly. She emphasized that such comments are not harmless words typed by anonymous users but come from real individuals. She expressed concern that the language used in these threats reflects dangerous mindsets, stating that if such people had the power or opportunity, they might act on their words. The frequency of these threats, she said, can be triggering and frightening, particularly when considering the vulnerability many women face. She also acknowledged that her public profile and relative influence offer a degree of protection, but worried about what such hostility could mean for those without similar visibility.

Despite these challenges, Ayesha’s career trajectory reflects resilience and determination. She began her journey in the industry as a junior artist and made her television debut in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, produced by Ekta Kapoor. She later appeared in Baalveer Returns and made her Telugu film debut in 2022 with a supporting role in Mukhachitram. Her popularity surged in 2023 after her appearance on Bigg Boss 17, hosted by Salman Khan, where she gained widespread recognition and a loyal fan base.

Following her reality television stint, Ayesha became a familiar face with her YouTube series Dil Ko Rafu Karr Lei and continued to expand her filmography. She appeared in a supporting role in Jaat and received praise for her performance in the special song “Shararat” in Dhurandhar, alongside Krystle D’Souza. Most recently, she featured in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, starring Kapil Sharma. Italian luxury house Bvlgari has appointed actor and producer Jake Gyllenhaal as its new global brand ambassador, aligning the Oscar-nominated performer with the jewelry and watchmaker’s international brand campaigns.

Gyllenhaal, a BAFTA Award winner whose career spans independent film, studio productions and theater, has built a reputation for taking on complex roles across projects such as Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler, Prisoners and Spider-Man: Far From Home. In addition to acting, he has expanded his footprint as a producer and remains active in stage work and film development.

Bvlgari said the partnership reflects the actor’s longstanding reputation for thoughtful project choices and cultural influence, qualities the Roman maison sees as aligned with its broader positioning of luxury rooted in craftsmanship, culture and human connection.

“Jake represents a contemporary form of excellence rooted in integrity, empathy and authenticity,” said Laura Burdese, Bvlgari’s deputy CEO, who is set to become CEO on July 1, 2026. “His artistic sensitivity and ability to create sincere connections with people reflect the essence of our maison.”

For Gyllenhaal, the collaboration reflects a shared interest in storytelling and craft.

“I’ve always felt close to Bvlgari for the way it blends beauty with meaning,” he said in a statement. “There is a generosity in the maison’s approach toward craftsmanship, culture and human stories. Authenticity, to me, is rooted in our relationships and in staying true to oneself.”
