Mark Ruffalo is speaking out about what he describes as a growing culture of fear inside Hollywood. In a new opinion piece co-written with American Economic Liberties Project research director Matt Stoller, the actor claimed that several major Hollywood figures privately supported efforts to block the proposed Paramount and Warner Bros. merger but refused to publicly sign an open letter opposing the deal.

According to Ruffalo, the issue was not a disagreement. It was fear.

“The most revealing thing about that letter wasn’t the people who signed. It was the people who didn’t,” the op-ed stated. “Not because they disagreed. Because they were afraid.”

The open letter opposing the merger reportedly gathered more than 4,000 signatures from actors, directors, writers, and industry professionals, including names like Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Denis Villeneuve, Sofia Coppola, and Edward Norton.

The campaign argues that the merger would further shrink an already highly concentrated entertainment industry and reduce opportunities for creators while giving even more power to a handful of giant corporations.

Ruffalo and Stoller claimed that many people in Hollywood privately admitted they supported the campaign but worried about possible retaliation if they publicly opposed the merger.

The op-ed pointed to multiple examples that they say illustrate the atmosphere of fear surrounding the deal.

One example involved entertainment publication The Ankler, which reportedly lost advertising support from Paramount after one of its editors appeared carrying “Block the Merger” buttons at an event.

Ruffalo also claimed he was suggested for a CNN segment discussing the merger, but the network allegedly backed away because Warner Bros. Discovery is CNN’s parent company.

According to the article, organizers were reportedly told the situation was “a delicate subject” because of the ongoing merger process.

The proposed Paramount and Warner Bros. merger has already become one of the most debated entertainment industry stories of the year, especially as concerns continue growing over media consolidation, studio layoffs, and shrinking creative freedom.

Critics of the merger argue that combining two of Hollywood’s biggest studios would reduce competition even further and leave fewer major buyers and distributors in the industry.

Supporters, however, believe the merger could strengthen both companies financially during a period where traditional studios continue struggling against streaming disruption and declining cable revenue.

Ruffalo ended the piece by encouraging artists and workers not to stay silent out of fear. He argued that challenging corporate power in Hollywood could also inspire broader resistance against monopolies across other industries as well.

The project will be launched for international sales at Cannes by Anton, while CAA is handling U.S. representation.

The screenplay comes from Haley Hope Bartels, with production scheduled to begin later this fall.

The movie also marks another high-profile collaboration for Natalie Portman, who continues expanding her work as both an actress and producer through her company MountainA.

Portman has recently balanced prestige dramas with large franchise work, from Black Swan and Jackie to Thor and Star Wars. Meanwhile, Bailey has quickly become one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising leading men following the enormous success of Wicked: For Good and Jurassic World Rebirth.

In fact, reports claim Bailey became the highest-grossing actor of 2025 after the combined box office success of both films.

Director Mimi Cave has also built a reputation for visually intense psychological storytelling following the success of Fresh starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Given the creative team involved, Pumping Black is already generating serious buzz ahead of Cannes.

The film’s combination of psychological obsession, elite sports pressure, and dark character drama could easily make it one of the most talked-about upcoming thrillers currently in development.

Paul Heyman is insisting that Brock Lesnar’s WWE retirement genuinely surprised him. In a new interview, the longtime WWE manager addressed Lesnar’s shocking retirement following WrestleMania, saying he had absolutely no clue “The Beast Incarnate” was planning to walk away from wrestling. Lesnar officially retired after losing to Oba Femi at WrestleMania in Las Vegas, ending one of the most dominant runs in WWE history. The moment became even more emotional when Lesnar removed his gloves and boots inside the ring while embracing Heyman.

Now, Heyman says his reaction that night was completely real.

“If I knew he was gonna retire, would I have gone on record saying he was gonna dominate for the next 15 years?” Heyman said while discussing the moment.

The WWE Hall of Famer explained that he was genuinely emotional during Lesnar’s farewell and pushed back at suggestions that the retirement was planned far in advance behind the scenes.

Instead, the episode completely flipped expectations.

In the final act, Teddy tells Owen she wants to stay with him and their children because he feels like home to her.

But Owen surprises her by revealing that he wants her to take the Paris job and that he plans on moving there with her and the kids.

Taylor Swift’s legal team is aggressively pushing back against a trademark lawsuit tied to her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.

In a new court filing, Swift’s attorneys reportedly described the lawsuit as “absurd” while arguing that the case should never have been filed in the first place.

The legal battle began after performer Maren Flagg, who performs under the name Maren Wade, accused Swift of trademark infringement over the phrase “showgirl.” Flagg previously trademarked Confessions of a Showgirl years before Swift announced her album title.

However, Swift’s lawyers are now claiming the lawsuit appears to be more about attaching Flagg’s brand to Taylor Swift’s massive global fame than actual trademark confusion.

According to the filing, Swift’s team argues that consumers are highly unlikely to mistake a Taylor Swift album for Flagg’s projects, which reportedly include a Las Vegas-themed production, articles, and an inactive website.

The filing also points out that several of Flagg’s projects had not been updated in years before Swift announced her album.

Swift’s attorneys additionally alleged that references to Swift suddenly began appearing across Flagg’s promotional materials and social media after The Life of a Showgirl was revealed publicly.

One particular detail gaining attention online involves a podcast teaser allegedly released after Swift’s announcement, which referenced “the world’s biggest pop star” becoming a “showgirl too.”

Flagg’s legal team has pushed back against Swift’s arguments and says they plan to formally respond in court soon.

The lawsuit originally gained headlines earlier this year after claims surfaced that the Trademark Office had initially raised concerns about similarities between the two titles.

Flagg’s side argues the case is about protecting creative work and trademarks that independent artists spend years building.

Meanwhile, Swift’s album continues to dominate commercially despite the legal controversy.

Released in late 2025, The Life of a Showgirl quickly became one of the biggest albums of Swift’s career, breaking multiple sales records and producing several hit songs.

The lawsuit remains ongoing, and no official trial date has been announced so far.
