From Ghajini to Baby John: Bollywood’s biggest South Indian remakes

0

Bollywood has been remaking South Indian films for decades and the trend is only getting bigger. Some of the biggest Hindi blockbusters, cult classics, and fan favorite comedies actually started their journey in Tamil, Telugu, or Malayalam cinema. From action packed mass entertainers to emotional dramas and comedy gems, South Indian films have often provided Bollywood with stories that connected strongly with audiences across India.

What makes this interesting is that many people still do not realize their favorite Bollywood movie was originally made in the South. In several cases, the Hindi versions became even bigger nationwide hits.

One of the biggest examples is Ghajini. The film starring Aamir Khan was a remake of the 2005 Tamil film of the same name. Both versions were directed by A. R. Murugadoss. The Hindi version created history by becoming the first Indian film to cross the ₹100 crore mark at the box office.

Then came Wanted, which changed the image of Salman Khan completely. The film was adapted from the Telugu blockbuster Pokiri starring Mahesh Babu. Many fans believe Wanted was the film that revived Salman’s career as a mass action superstar.

Another major remake success was Singham. The original Tamil version starred Suriya, while the Hindi remake featured Ajay Devgn. The movie became so popular that it eventually turned into a full cop universe in Bollywood.

Rowdy Rathore also came from the South. It was adapted from S. S. Rajamouli’s Telugu hit Vikramarkudu. The film gave audiences a larger than life action entertainer packed with comedy, action, and catchy dialogues.

Thrillers also found their way north. Drishyam was a remake of the Malayalam classic starring Mohanlal. The gripping story about an ordinary man protecting his family became a massive success in Hindi too. Its sequel, Drishyam 2, followed the same path and was again adapted from the Malayalam original.

One of the most talked about remakes in recent years was Kabir Singh. The film starring Shahid Kapoor was based on the Telugu hit Arjun Reddy. Both films were directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Despite mixed reactions around its story, the film became a huge commercial hit.

Comedy lovers may be surprised to know that Hera Pheri, now considered one of Bollywood’s greatest comedy films, was actually adapted from the Malayalam movie Ramji Rao Speaking. Even today, the film’s dialogues and scenes are part of internet meme culture.

Chachi 420 starring Kamal Haasan was also inspired by a Tamil film called Avvai Shanmugi, which itself took inspiration from the Hollywood film Mrs. Doubtfire.

Romantic dramas also joined the remake wave. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein was adapted from the Tamil film Minnale. Interestingly, R. Madhavan starred in both versions. Even though the Hindi film was not a huge hit initially, it later became a cult favorite among Bollywood romance fans.

Saathiya was another successful remake. The film came from Mani Ratnam’s Tamil romantic drama Alaipayuthey and was loved for its music and emotional storytelling.

Horror comedy fans know Bhool Bhulaiyaa as one of Bollywood’s most entertaining films, but it was actually based on the Malayalam psychological thriller Manichitrathazhu. The story has now been remade in multiple Indian languages.

The remake culture goes back even further. Ram Aur Shyam starring Dilip Kumar was adapted from the Telugu film Ramudu Bheemudu. It became one of the most iconic double role films in Hindi cinema.

Ek Duuje Ke Liye was remade from the Telugu movie Maro Charitra and also marked Kamal Haasan’s Hindi debut. The tragic love story became unforgettable for an entire generation.

Political thriller Nayak: The Real Hero starring Anil Kapoor was adapted from the Tamil film Mudhalvan. Even years later, fans still remember its unique one day chief minister storyline.

The remake trend continues strongly even today. Vikram Vedha brought the popular Tamil thriller to Hindi audiences with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles.

Jersey was adapted from the award winning Telugu original, while Sarfira came from the Tamil film Soorarai Pottru.

Even Baby John follows the same pattern as it is based on the Tamil hit Theri.

At this point, South Indian cinema has become one of Bollywood’s biggest creative sources. Some remakes stay very close to the original while others add a completely different flavor for Hindi audiences. But one thing is clear. Many of Bollywood’s biggest entertainers would not exist without the powerful stories first told in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema.

If confirmed, this would be the fifth film featuring Salman and Kareena together and their first collaboration since Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2015. The pair previously worked together in films like Kyon Ki…, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, and Bodyguard.

The upcoming film is being produced by Atul Agnihotri along with Mythri Movie Makers. It will reportedly show Salman Khan as an aging superhero pulled back into action because of unexpected events. The project will also mark the theatrical return of director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. after their 2017 film A Gentleman.

Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan will next be seen in the upcoming Kartavya, backed by Red Chillies Entertainment. Shah Rukh Khan recently shared the poster and wrote, “Kartavya ke iss chakravyuh mein, har faisla ek imtihaan hoga. Why South Indian superstars no longer need Bollywood to rule Indian cinema

0

For decades, Bollywood was seen as the final destination for any Indian actor dreaming of nationwide fame. South Indian stars often crossed over to Hindi cinema because that was considered the biggest stage in the country. But today, the equation has completely changed. Now, many South superstars are openly saying no to Bollywood offers, and the reason is much bigger than money or ego. It is about confidence, identity, and the realization that success no longer depends on Mumbai alone.

When Mahesh Babu said “Bollywood can’t afford me,” the statement created massive controversy. Many people saw it as arrogance. But if one looks closely, his point was actually about creative satisfaction and stature. He already enjoys superstardom in Telugu cinema, massive box office numbers, and complete creative backing. For stars like him, shifting to Bollywood is no longer an “upgrade.”

The same mindset can be seen with Allu Arjun. After Pushpa became a nationwide phenomenon, he no longer needs Bollywood validation. Hindi audiences are already watching his films in theatres and on streaming platforms. Reports of him declining Jawan and other Hindi projects show that South actors are becoming far more selective. They do not want token cameos or side roles anymore. If they enter Bollywood, they want to enter on their own terms.

Yash is another interesting example. After KGF, he became a pan India star without depending on Bollywood at all. Earlier, Hindi cinema was considered the gateway to national fame. Today, films from Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam industries themselves are becoming national events.

What is even more fascinating is that these actors are not rejecting Hindi audiences. They are rejecting the old idea that Bollywood sits at the top of Indian cinema. There is a huge difference between the two.

The rise of dubbed films, OTT platforms, and social media has changed audience behaviour completely. A viewer sitting in Delhi now watches Telugu and Malayalam films as naturally as Hindi films. Because of that, actors no longer feel pressured to relocate or reinvent themselves for Bollywood.

Another major factor is storytelling. Many South actors believe their home industries currently offer stronger hero driven cinema, deeper fan culture, and better respect for stardom. Several actors have quietly admitted through interviews over the years that they feel more creatively comfortable working with directors and writers who understand their cultural roots.

Ironically, Bollywood itself is now depending heavily on South filmmakers, South technicians, South remakes, and South stars to regain theatrical momentum. That would have sounded impossible fifteen years ago.

This does not mean Bollywood is finished. Hindi cinema still has unmatched global reach and enormous influence. But the power balance has changed. Indian cinema is no longer revolving around one industry.

The real story is not that South stars are rejecting Bollywood. The real story is that they no longer need Bollywood to become national icons.

Shah Rukh Khan And Deepika Padukone’s King Shoot Video Leaks Online

0

A new video from the sets of King has leaked online and is quickly gaining attention on social media. The clip reportedly shows Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone shooting a dance sequence on a beach in South Africa. Many fans also believe the video features Ranveer Singh standing nearby with the couple’s daughter, Dua, in his arms.

In the viral video, Shah Rukh Khan is seen wearing an all black outfit while Deepika Padukone appears in a long pink and blue dress. The two actors are filming on a scenic beach location as crew members work around them. Although the face of the man holding the baby is not clearly visible, fans online are convinced it is Ranveer Singh watching the shoot while taking care of Dua.

Another moment from the clip that caught attention online was Deepika’s bodyguard, Jalaluddin Shaikh, also known as Jalal. He was seen trying to entertain baby Dua with dance moves while standing close to the family during the shoot. The video has since gone viral, with many social media users reacting to the sweet family moment.

Earlier, a source connected to the production had spoken about how Ranveer Singh has been supporting Deepika during the film’s shoot schedule. The source said, “It’s nice to see how supportive Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone are to each other. While Deepika has been busy shooting for King in South Africa, Ranveer, even after ground-breaking success and putting together Pralay, is spending time with his little Dua.”

The insider also added, “While Dua’s mommy is filming, he’s taking care of her. He’s being present and hands-on. Dua has been his lucky charm with 3 Ds (Deepika, Dua, Dhurandhar) changing his life. There are still a few days of shoot left, but after delivering Dhurandhar, Ranveer has chosen to be away from the spotlight, which is surprising.”

Meanwhile, director Siddharth Anand recently requested fans not to share leaked content from the film’s sets. His statement read, “Request to all the fans. Please do not post or circulate any leaked multimedia from the sets of King. The team is working round the clock to ensure the best cinematic experience for everyone. Let us wait for the surprise on the big screen and for the assets to be revealed as the team of King originally intends to. Thank you for your love, support and cooperation (sic).”

James Cameron Sued Over Avatar Character Design, Actress Claims Neytiri Was Based on Her Face

0

James Cameron and The Walt Disney Company are facing a major legal controversy after actress Q’orianka Kilcher filed a lawsuit connected to the blockbuster Avatar franchise. The actress has accused Cameron of using her facial features as inspiration for the famous character Neytiri without asking for permission or giving her any credit or payment.

Q’orianka Kilcher is best known for playing Pocahontas in The New World when she was just 14 years old. According to the lawsuit, the actress claims James Cameron admitted that her appearance inspired the look of Neytiri, the iconic Na’vi character played by Zoe Saldaña in the Avatar films.

As per reports, Q’orianka said Cameron used a published photograph of her and instructed his design team to study her facial features while creating Neytiri’s final appearance. Her legal team argued that the filmmaker and the companies involved used her identity and cultural background without consent while creating one of the biggest movie franchises in history.

The lawsuit also claims that the Avatar franchise publicly positioned itself as supportive of Indigenous communities and struggles, while secretly benefiting from the image of a real Indigenous actress behind the scenes. Along with Cameron, the complaint also names his production company Lightstorm Entertainment and several visual effects companies connected to the films.

According to court documents, Q’orianka first met Cameron at a charity event shortly after Avatar released in 2009. During the meeting, Cameron allegedly invited her to his office and gifted her a signed sketch of Neytiri that he personally drew. The actress claims the director also wrote a note saying her beauty had been an early inspiration for the character and mentioned that she could not join the film because she was busy working on another project at the time.

Q’orianka stated in the lawsuit that she felt deeply shocked and hurt after learning that her face may have been used as part of the creative process without her knowledge. She reportedly only became fully aware of it after an old interview clip of Cameron resurfaced online last year. In the video, Cameron allegedly pointed to a sketch of Neytiri and explained that the lower part of the character’s face was inspired by Q’orianka because she had “a very interesting face.”

The actress is now seeking financial compensation, a share of profits connected to the use of her likeness and a public acknowledgment from the filmmakers. The Avatar franchise remains one of the biggest in cinema history, with the first film earning more than $2.9 billion worldwide and its sequels also becoming massive box office successes.

Palash Muchhal Visits Rajasthan Temples Amid Legal Controversy, Turns Off Comments on Viral Post

0

Singer and music composer Palash Muchhal has been making headlines after a legal complaint was filed against him over alleged casteist remarks. Amid the controversy, the musician recently visited famous temples in Rajasthan and shared photos from his spiritual trip on social media. His latest Instagram post has now gone viral online, especially because he chose to disable the comments section after sharing the pictures.

On Wednesday, Palash posted several photos from his visit to the famous Khatu Shyam Ji Temple and Salasar Balaji Temple. In the pictures, the singer can be seen praying, bowing before the deities and seeking blessings. Some photos also showed him posing with temple officials during the visit. Along with the images, Palash wrote a simple emotional caption in Hindi that spoke about finding peace and comfort through faith and devotion.

The temple visit comes just days after Palash landed in legal trouble. According to reports, a case has been registered against him under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. The complaint was reportedly filed by Vigyan Prakash Mane, who is said to be a childhood friend of cricketer Smriti Mandhana.’

As per reports, the incident allegedly took place on November 22 at a toll plaza on the Sangli Ashta road in Maharashtra. Mane claimed that during an argument, Palash used caste based offensive language against him. Police have registered the case under relevant sections of the SC ST Act along with other legal provisions, and the matter is currently under investigation.

Reports also suggest that the issue may have started because of a financial disagreement. Police sources claim that Palash had allegedly borrowed around ₹25 lakh from Mane for a film production project. Later, when Mane reportedly asked for the money back, it led to a heated argument between the two.

Meanwhile, Palash’s lawyer Shreyansh Mithare has strongly denied all allegations against the singer. He called the complaint a publicity stunt and stated that they are planning to take legal action against Mane for making false claims.

Palash had already been in the news earlier after his wedding with Smriti Mandhana was unexpectedly called off last year. The couple was reportedly supposed to get married on November 23, but the celebrations were stopped due to a medical emergency involving Smriti’s father. Soon after, Palash was also admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, leading to widespread rumours and speculation about their relationship.

Robert Downey Jr Slams Influencer Culture, Says Social Media Stars Cannot Replace Real Talent

0

Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr. has sparked a major debate online after speaking openly about influencer culture and the growing popularity of social media celebrities. During a recent appearance on the Conversations for our Daughters podcast, the actor shared his honest thoughts about influencers becoming the “stars of the future” and made it clear that he strongly disagrees with the idea.

The actor explained that in today’s world, people can become famous very quickly just by posting videos of themselves online. According to him, social media has made it possible for anyone with a phone and internet access to create celebrity status without necessarily building any real skill or craft first. While he admitted he does not completely see this as a bad thing, he believes it has created a challenge for younger generations who now need to focus more on developing their own identity and real abilities.

Downey Jr said he hopes young people continue to dream beyond internet fame and instead focus on creating meaningful work, learning new things and building careers that have long term value. He strongly reacted to the idea that influencers will become the biggest stars in the future, saying he completely disagrees with that belief. His comments quickly went viral online, with many people supporting his views while others defended the importance of digital creators in today’s entertainment world.

Interestingly, the actor himself is hugely popular on social media. His Instagram account has more than 58 million followers, most of whom became fans during his iconic run as Tony Stark in the Iron Man and the larger Avengers franchise. Despite this massive online following, Downey Jr admitted he tries not to spend too much time online because he does not want social media to consume his life.

He also shared that he has met many influencers while promoting films over the years and believes several of them are talented, grounded and genuinely good people. However, he explained that he avoids pretending to give fans constant personal access online just for attention. The actor said he feels many social media moments are often carefully manufactured rather than fully natural.

Meanwhile, fans are eagerly waiting for Downey Jr’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor will next appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but this time he will not return as Iron Man. Instead, he will play the famous Marvel villain Doctor Doom, also known as Victor Von Doom. The film is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo and is expected to become one of Marvel’s biggest upcoming releases.

Riteish Deshmukh’s Raja Shivaji Creates History at Box Office but Faces Drop After Record Opening

Riteish Deshmukh’s historical drama Raja Shivaji has become one of the most talked about Marathi films of the year. The movie, based on the life of legendary Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, released in theatres on May 1 and created history with a massive opening at the box office. The film earned an impressive ₹11.35 crore on its first day, making it the biggest opening ever for a Marathi film. Fans across Maharashtra and other parts of the country rushed to theatres to watch the grand historical drama, giving the film a dream start.

After the strong opening, the movie continued to perform well during the weekend. It collected around ₹10.55 crore on Saturday and saw further growth on Sunday with earnings of nearly ₹12 crore. The film benefited from positive word of mouth and emotional reactions from audiences who connected deeply with the story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. However, despite the historic beginning, the film has not been able to maintain the same momentum during the weekdays.

According to the latest box office reports from Sacnilk, Raja Shivaji collected ₹4.25 crore on day 6. This was slightly lower than its previous day collection of ₹4.90 crore. So far, the movie has earned around ₹57.70 crore gross in India, while the net collection stands at approximately ₹48.65 crore. Even though the collections have slowed down after the opening weekend, the film is still performing better than many recent regional releases.

The film also faced competition from Ek Din, starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, but the clash did not affect Raja Shivaji much. Reports suggest that Ek Din struggled at the box office, while audiences continued choosing Raja Shivaji in theatres. The movie earned around ₹3 crore from Marathi shows and ₹1.25 crore from Hindi screenings recently, showing strong support from Marathi audiences in particular.

Directed by Riteish Deshmukh, the film has been produced by Genelia D’Souza and Jyoti Deshpande under Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company. Riteish plays Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the film, while Genelia stars as Saibai. Their sons Rahyl and Riaan also appear in the movie as young Shivaji. The film also features a big supporting cast including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi and Amole Gupte.

Speaking about the audience response, Riteish shared that he feels happiest seeing families visit theatres together to watch the film. He said many grandparents, parents and even very young children are coming to cinemas because they want the younger generation to learn about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. According to the actor, the emotional connection audiences are feeling is more important than just box office numbers.
