bollywood box office report of the week : 9 april 2015

This week’s two major releases are Paresh Rawal starrer, DHARAM SANKET MEIN and the Sunny Leone venture, EK PAHELI LEELA. One feels that it’s an almost equal battle but once the initial hype is over, DHARAM SANKAT MEIN may prove to be the lambi race ka ghoda.

Last Friday’s interesting Hollywood versus Bollywood (though with no A-listers), was comprehensibly won by the record smashing FAST & FURIOUS 7 which literally ran over DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY!

Coming to the number crunching, during the 4-day opening weekend, Vin Diesel’s FAST & FURIOUS 7 smashed all previous Hollywood venture records in India by a distance. The film netted around 50 crore (including dubbed versions), a figure that would make some of the Hindi releases proud.

On the other hand, Dibakar Banerjee’s Sushant Singh Rajput starrer, DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY!, which started on a decent note, did show a growth (but not very significant), during the opening 3-day weekend, netting nearly 15 crore .

Given the heavy 35 crore all inclusive cost , the film will have to work hard for breaking even, that too with a 15 crore (approx.) satellite price already in. DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY! is decent in the overseas (read US) grossing £35,000 from UK and $340,000 from the US, during the opening weekend (3-5 April).

Coming to the two older releases, Shadab Mirza directed BARKHAA and Karan Raj Kanwar’s YAHAAN SABKI LAGI HAI; both the mentioned films have flopped.

Meanwhile Shemaroo Entertainment’s HUNTERRR fell in the second week, as it collected 80 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.15 lakhs from Surat, 3 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Rajkot, 25 lakhs from Pune, 3.65 lakhs from Nasik, 1.50 lakhs from Goa, 1 lakh from Belgaum, 25 lakhs from Delhi city, 5 lakhs from Noida, 4.65 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 4.15 lakhs from Lucknow, 5.15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 2 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.25 lakhs from Jalandhar, 10 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.50 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.75 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 5 lakhs from Nagpur, 4 lakhs from Raipur, 5.75 lakhs from Indore, 1.25 lakhs from Bhopal, 5 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.25 lakhs from Udaipur, 1 lakh from Hyderabad, 3.15 lakhs from Aurangabad and 10 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding around 2.50 crore HUNTERRR has netted 11 crore in two weeks from India. The low budget HUNTERRR (all inclusive 8 crore) will end up as an average fare, once non-theatrical rights are accounted for.

Moving on, Anushka Sharma’s debut production venture, NH10, saw another productive week collecting 50 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.50 lakhs from Surat, 2 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 15 lakhs from Pune, 1.50 lakhs from Nasik, 55 lakhs from Delhi city, 8.50 lakhs from Noida, 4.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4 lakhs from Kanpur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 5.25 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.15 lakhs from Allahabad, 15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.55 lakhs from Faridabad, 5 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2.25 lakhs from Ludhiana, 20 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.20 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.50 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 2.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Raipur, 4.50 lakhs from Indore, 1 lakh from Bhopal (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 6 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 10 lakhs from Hyderabad and 20 lakhs from Bangalore. With another 3 crore, NH10 has netted 32 crore in three weeks from India. The moderately budgeted NH10 is approaching a hit status. The film has also grossed $1.2m from the overseas.

Concluding with Yash Raj Films’ DUM LAGA KE HAISHA, the film added another 1.75 crore, thus netting 30.50 crore in five weeks from India, and is a clean hit.
