Jana Nayagan cleared by CBFC, CM Thalapathy Vijay’s final film set

After a 7 month wait, CM Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan gets CBFC clearance with an A certificate and is set for a worldwide release on July 24, 2026

After keeping fans and the trade on edge for nearly seven months, the wait is finally over. Thalapathy Vijay’s much awaited final film, Jana Nayagan, has officially completed its censorship process and is now confirmed for a worldwide theatrical release on July 24, 2026. The confirmation came on July 9, bringing an end to one of the longest and most closely watched certification journeys in recent Tamil cinema.

The release date has now been officially locked, with KVN Productions’ business head and producer Suprith Mohan confirming that the film will arrive in cinemas across the globe on July 24. The Central Board of Film Certification has also granted the film an ‘A’ certificate, ending months of uncertainty surrounding its release. While the detailed list of cuts is yet to be made public, the certification process has finally been completed.

The CBFC listing reveals a runtime of 183 minutes, making Jana Nayagan a three hour and three minute political action drama. Even before the official announcement, distributors across international markets had begun preparing for the release. Reportedly various exhibitors have quickly launched promotional campaigns after receiving confirmation of the date, reflecting the strong confidence surrounding the film’s box office prospects.

The journey to release has been anything but smooth. Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled to arrive during the Pongal festival on January 9, 2026, but encountered an unprecedented series of hurdles. The film was initially expected to receive a U/A 16+ certification. However, differences within the examining committee resulted in the film being referred to a Revision Committee, significantly extending the certification process. The matter eventually reached the Madras High Court as the makers fought to secure clearance without making changes they believed would affect the film’s narrative.

Adding to the challenges, an unfinished high definition version of the film surfaced online in April. Although the leak led to swift police action and arrests, it created additional pressure on the makers, who remained determined to ensure that audiences experienced the film first on the big screen.

The delay has also transformed the significance of the film. When it was first announced, Jana Nayagan was expected to be Vijay’s farewell to cinema before entering politics. Today, the film is set to release after Vijay has already assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following the decisive victory of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in the state assembly elections. This has added a completely new dimension to the film and has only heightened public curiosity.

Directed by H. Vinoth and mounted on a reported budget of around ₹500 crore, Jana Nayagan follows the story of Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, a former police officer who takes on a deeply corrupt system while trying to stop a major threat facing the nation. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj and Priyamani, while Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music.

With the certification hurdle finally behind it, the focus now shifts entirely to the box office. Trade circles expect Jana Nayagan to open on a massive scale across India and overseas. Combined with Vijay’s immense fan following, his new political stature and months of built up anticipation, the film is widely expected to register one of the biggest openings of the year and could potentially rewrite several box office records.
