The movie based on Sharat Chandra's novel told the story of a tragic lover who takes to alcohol and destroys himself for want of love. The character of DEVDAS suited Saigal to the T. Saigal's depiction of the alcoholic lover was never portrayed so convincingly on the celluloid ever.
