Will Smith Returns to Big-Budget Action With Prison Thriller Supermax

Will Smith is set to star in Supermax, a new action-thriller from director David Gordon Green, with Amazon MGM Studios securing worldwide rights in a major deal.

Will Smith is officially stepping back into the action-thriller spotlight. The Oscar-winning actor has signed on to star in Supermax, a high-stakes FBI thriller directed by David Gordon Green. The project has already generated major buzz after Amazon MGM Studios reportedly secured worldwide rights in a deal worth around $70 million. According to reports, Supermax follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Smith will play one of the lead agents, while casting is still underway for the female co-lead.

The screenplay comes from writers David Weil and David J. Rosen, known for projects like Hunters and Invasion.

Production is expected to begin in August, with the film heading directly to streaming instead of a theatrical release.

The project marks Smith’s first major non-franchise studio movie in years following the success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which became a significant comeback moment for the actor after the fallout from the 2022 Oscars controversy.

For Green, Supermax represents his biggest-budget feature yet. The director is best known for revitalizing the Halloween franchise and recently worked on the Amazon series Scarpetta.

Industry insiders say Amazon moved aggressively to secure the project before it could officially hit the Cannes market, signaling strong confidence not only in the film itself, but also in Smith’s enduring box office appeal.

Over the past three decades, Smith has remained one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, leading hits ranging from Men in Black and I Am Legend to Independence Day and Ali.

With Supermax, Smith appears ready to dive back into the kind of large-scale action storytelling that made him a global superstar in the first place.
