The shift was reinforced by advice from his longtime collaborator and producer Paul Dinello, who encouraged him to embrace that side of his comedic voice again. Dinello told him plainly that audiences enjoyed seeing him engage politically, and that it was the part of the show that resonated most.

Colbert compared the moment to metaphorically digging up something he had tried to bury. Once he leaned back into political humor, the show found its footing and grew into one of the most talked-about late-night programs of its era. His commentary, often critical of public figures including Donald Trump, became a defining feature of the show’s identity.

Now, as the show approaches its end, Colbert is also addressing the decision by CBS to cancel the long-running franchise. Tristan Thompson has filed for conservatorship over his 19-year-old brother Amari Thompson, citing concerns about his ability to care for himself due to significant medical and developmental conditions. According to legal documents, Thompson is seeking to become Amari’s limited conservator, stating that his brother is “unable to properly provide for his personal needs,” including basic requirements such as physical health, food, clothing, and shelter. The filing also notes that Amari is not capable of managing financial resources or protecting himself from potential fraud or undue influence.

The request outlines that Amari lives with an intellectual disability and developmental delay, conditions that prevent him from making informed decisions about his care or legal matters. Because of these challenges, the documents state that Amari is unable to express a preference regarding who should serve as his conservator.

Amari has been diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe and rare form of epilepsy that typically begins in childhood and can result in frequent seizures, cognitive impairment, and long-term neurological complications. The condition often requires constant medical supervision and long-term support.

This legal move follows an earlier step taken by Thompson in February 2024, when he became Amari’s legal guardian after the death of their mother, Andrea Thompson. At the time, Amari was still a minor. The filing also reiterates that their father has not been involved in Amari’s upbringing for several years, with a prior court ruling determining that reunification was not viable under California law.
