The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from actor Karisma Kapoor on a plea filed by Priya Sachdev Kapur, who has requested certified copies of documents related to Karisma’s 2016 divorce settlement with her former husband, the late businessman Sunjay Kapur. The development has added another layer to the ongoing legal disputes surrounding Sunjay’s estate.

Reacting to Priya’s demand, Sunjay Kapur’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, questioned the intent behind the plea and suggested it was an attempt to divert attention from the larger inheritance battle currently underway. Speaking to news agency ANI, Mandhira said that if her brother had intended to share details of his divorce settlement with Priya, he would have done so during their marriage.

“It’s trying to divert what is going on. Firstly, if my brother wanted to share this with her, he would have shared it with her while they were married,” Mandhira said. She further added that Priya had already presented the relevant information in court, questioning the need to pursue the matter again.

Mandhira also stressed that divorce proceedings, particularly those involving children, should remain private. “I think a divorce is confidential. They have children together. It’s not anybody’s business except for the two people involved in it,” she said, adding that Priya had no reason to seek access to those records.

Priya Sachdev Kapur has approached the Supreme Court seeking certified copies of all documents related to the divorce case between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur. According to reports, she wants to verify financial settlements and child custody arrangements agreed upon during the divorce proceedings.

Sunjay Kapur, who was the chairman of automotive components major Sona Comstar, married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had two children—daughter Samaira, born in 2005, and son Kiaan, born in 2011. Differences emerged over the years, and the couple filed for divorce in 2014, which was finalised in 2016.

Following the divorce, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev, and the couple later welcomed a son, Azarias.

The dispute over Sunjay Kapur’s estate has been ongoing for several months. In August last year, Priya submitted a document to the Delhi High Court claiming it to be Sunjay’s will. This claim was contested by his children Samaira and Kiaan, as well as Rani Kapur. Media reports suggested that Sunjay’s assets could be worth around ₹30,000 crore, though Karisma’s children stated they were unaware of the exact value. In September, the Delhi High Court directed Priya to submit a detailed list of Sunjay’s assets.
