This week's two new releases are going to be the Shakun Batra directed Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan starrer, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU and the Payal Rohatgi, Rakhi Sawant and Sangram Singh starrer, VALENTINE'S NIGHT (still to be confirmed). Needless to add that the battle will be won by the big banner and more glossy EK MAIN AUR EKK TU. The film may not be carrying a huge hype but given the Valentine week and the rom-com genre, the film will appeal to the core youth audience and EMAET will definitely have a good to decent weekend. The best performance will come from 'A' centre multiplexes. What must also be kept in mind is the fact that the still strong AGNEEPATH will pose a tough challenge to both EK MAIN AUR EKK TU and VALENTINE'S NIGHT.
Last Friday's solo Hindi release, One Up Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.'s GALI GALI CHOR HAI could not quite cash in on its topical theme. Though there was a noticeable pick up on Sunday at some single screens, the film netted just about 3.25 crore during the opening weekend. The Rumi Jaffrey directed Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran and Mughda Godse starrer, GALI GALI CHOR HAI, will find the going even tough in the wake of AGNEEPATH and the two new releases, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU and VALENTINE'S NIGHT.
Moving on, after a superb weekend the Karan Malhotra directed Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra starrer, AGNEEPATH, continued to be quite strong even during the weekdays. During the opening week AGNEEPATH collected 10.55 crore from Bombay, 2.25 crore from Ahmedabad, 45 lakhs from Surat, 60 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 62.75 lakhs from Rajkot, 13.35 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1 crore from Pune, 46.30 lakhs from Nasik, 18.50 lakhs from Goa, 11.55 lakhs from Belgaum, 5.75 crore from Delhi city, 58 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 55 lakhs from Kanpur, 88.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 25 lakhs from Agra, 26.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 95 lakhs from Gurgaon, 17.55 lakhs from Faridabad, 32.35 lakhs from Chandigarh, 9 lakhs from Zirakpur, 14 lakhs from Jalandhar, 13 lakhs from Amritsar, 12 lakhs from Ludhiana, 10 lakhs from Bhatinda, 7.50 lakhs from Ambala, 1.35 crore from Calcutta, 1.35 lakhs from Darjeeling, 14 lakhs from Siliguri, 9 lakhs from Dhanbad, 8.75 lakhs from Guwahati, 80.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 38 lakhs from Jabalpur, 43 lakhs from Raipur, 1 crore from Indore (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 10.50 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 6 cinemas unreceived), 60 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 2 crore from Jaipur, 25 lakhs from Ajmer, 12 lakhs from Bikaner, 33 lakhs from Kota, 1.70 crore from Hyderabad, 42.55 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 12.55 lakhs from Latur, 1.50 crore from Bangalore, 16 lakhs from Mangalore, 5.20 lakhs from Vijayawada, 7.55 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 9.30 lakhs from Madras. Netting a huge 90 crore during the opening week from India, AGNEEPATH is a hit. With a cost of 72-75 crore (all inclusive), more than half of which has already been recovered from satellite and audio rights, AGNEEPATH may well end up as a super hit, at the end of its run. The film has also done good business in the overseas (over $ 5 million) grossing ?596,000 from UK and $1,750,843 from the US till the second weekend (3-5 February).
The AGNEEPATH onslaught has ended the run of almost all the older releases like THE DIRTY PICTURE, DON 2 and PLAYERS. The three mentioned films have netted below 10 lakhs during their 9th, 6th and 4th weeks respectively!
