Though Juhi Chawla won stardom with her commercial movies, the roles close to her heart are the ones that she essayed in parallel cinema like MY BROTHER NIKHIL and I AM. Incidentally both the films have been made by the budding film maker Onir, who has studied cinema at Berlin and has the distinction of making daringly different movies which have won him international acclaim.

In an interview Juhi confessed, ”True commercial cinema gave me name and fame but movies like MY BROTHER NIKHIL and I AM gave me creative satisfaction as an actress.” She added, ”When I was approached by Onir to play a sister’s role in MY BROTHER NIKHIL, I was advised by many to decline the offer as it would ruin my heroine’s image. Nevertheless, I took the challenge as the strength of the character gave me confidence to take a plunge and it proved right.”

Both the movies won Juhi multiple awards and rave reviews for her outstanding performances. Juhi Chawla was extremely delighted when she won the Zee Best Actress ‘Critic Award’ for her performance in MY BROTHER NIKHIL because the award came from the critics, who had never taken her seriously as an actress par excellence!

Further she won the Best Actress Award at the London Asian Film Festival for her role in I AM.

Juhi Chawla is now set to stun the audience with yet another interesting role in her upcoming movie GULAAB GANG, where she plays a negative role for the first time on the silver screen. Juhi has declared that her role is completely dark unlike Kajol in GUPT.
