For most people, changing a surname is a personal decision. But when multiple children from one of Hollywood’s most famous families start dropping the same last name, people are bound to ask questions. The latest Jolie-Pitt child to make headlines is Maddox Jolie-Pitt, who has reportedly filed legal paperwork to change his name from Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie. The filing comes months after Maddox was credited simply as “Maddox Jolie” while working as an assistant director on Angelina Jolie’s film Couture.
What makes the move significant is that Maddox is not alone.
Over the past two years, several of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children have publicly distanced themselves from the Pitt surname.
In 2024, Shiloh legally petitioned to remove Pitt from her name shortly after turning 18. The request was later granted by a Los Angeles court.
That same year, Vivienne appeared in the Playbill credits for Broadway’s The Outsiders as “Vivienne Jolie” rather than Vivienne Jolie-Pitt.
Zahara also introduced herself publicly as “Zahara Marley Jolie” during a sorority event at Spelman College, noticeably leaving out Pitt from her name. Now, with Maddox reportedly taking legal steps to do the same, a pattern is becoming difficult to ignore.
Meanwhile, Brad Pitt’s youngest son Knox remains publicly known as Knox Jolie-Pitt, while son Pax has not legally changed his name but has reportedly maintained a strained relationship with the actor in recent years.
The developments come against the backdrop of one of Hollywood’s longest and most public family disputes. Pitt and Jolie’s relationship began in 2005 after meeting on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The couple became one of the most photographed families in the world before marrying in 2014.
Just two years later, everything changed.
Angelina Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 following an alleged incident aboard a private jet involving Pitt and members of the family. Jolie later accused Pitt of abusive behavior during the flight. Pitt has consistently denied the allegations, and no criminal charges were filed after investigations.
What followed was nearly a decade of legal battles involving custody disputes, property disagreements, and the ongoing fight over Château Miraval, the French winery the former couple once owned together.
While the legal war continued, many fans noticed something else. The children appeared far more often with Jolie than with Pitt. Although neither side publicly discusses the details of their family relationships, reports over the years have repeatedly suggested that Pitt’s bond with several of his children became strained after the divorce.
Today, Brad Pitt appears to be entering a very different chapter of his life.
Since late 2022, the Oscar-winning actor has been in a relationship with jewelry executive Ines de Ramon. The couple has steadily become more serious over the years, making public appearances together at film premieres, Formula One events, international festivals and private gatherings.
According to multiple reports, de Ramon eventually moved into Pitt’s home, and sources close to the couple have repeatedly described the relationship as stable, private and long-term.
From the outside, Pitt’s personal life appears to be moving forward.
But at the same time, several of his children appear to be moving in the opposite direction when it comes to their connection with his name.
Of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s six children:
• Maddox has reportedly filed to become Maddox Jolie.
• Shiloh legally became Shiloh Jolie.
• Vivienne publicly uses Vivienne Jolie in professional credits.
• Zahara publicly introduces herself as Zahara Jolie.
• Pax has not legally changed his name but has been linked to reports of family tension.
• Knox continues to publicly use Jolie-Pitt.
Of course, none of these children have publicly explained every reason behind their choices, and changing a surname does not automatically reveal the full story of a family relationship.
Still, when four children have already publicly dropped or stopped using the same surname, it has become one of the most talked-about developments in the ongoing Jolie-Pitt family saga.
For Brad Pitt, life may currently be filled with movie premieres, a serious relationship with Ines de Ramon, and a fresh chapter after his divorce.
For many observers, however, the bigger headline is much harder to ignore:
Why are so many of his children choosing not to carry his name anymore?
