Bollywood box-office report of the week : 30 january 2014

The coming Friday will witness the release of Abhay Deol's home venture, ONE BY TWO. Though the film carries good reports amongst certain sections of the web media, but lack of face value and awareness amongst the cinema going audience will mark its chances. One feels that yet again JAI HO will remain the first choice of the audience even this weekend.

After a somewhat below expectations opening days (Friday and Saturday), the Sohail Khan directed Salman Khan starrer JAI HO saw a big pick up on Republic Day (Sunday) thereby netting a healthy 60 crore during the opening weekend from India. The film now needs to carry the good work forward even during the weekdays to match Salman Khan's recent releases. JAI HO saw a similar trend in the overseas grossing a good $3.50m, with ? 245,500 from UK and $840,500 from the US, during the opening weekend (24-26 January).

Coming to the earlier releases, Suneel Darshan's KARLE PYAAR KARLE and Nawazuddin Siddiqui's much delayed MISS LOVELY, both the films which took the risk of releasing a week before a huge venture like JAI HO, saw rejection from the audience. Just for records, KARLE PYAAR KARLE netted 1.25 crore while MISS LOVELY just about managed 75 lakhs during the first week from India. The third release of the week, PARANTHE WALI GALI, is a washout.

Meanwhile Vishal Bhardwaj's DEDH ISHQIYA managed reasonably in the second week as it collected 75 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 11.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2 lakhs from Surat, 4.25 lakhs from Baroda, 30 lakhs from Pune, 2.50 lakhs from Nasik, 1 lakh from Goa, 85 lakhs from Delhi city, 17.25 lakhs from Noida, 9 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 13.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 2 lakhs from Agra, 2.65 lakhs from Allahabad, 20.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh from Kurukshetra, 9 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 3 lakhs from Ludhiana, 1.15 lakhs from Bhatinda, 1 lakh from Jammu, 12 lakhs from Calcutta, 1 lakh from Siliguri, 1 lakh from Dhanbad, 1 lakh from Ranchi, 1.75 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 5 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.75 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.65 lakhs from Raipur, 7.55 lakhs from Indore, 1.75 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Bhopal, 15 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Ajmer, 2.15 lakhs from Kota, 3 lakhs from Udaipur, 20 lakhs from Hyderabad, 25 lakhs from Bangalore, 1 lakh from Mangalore and 1 lakh from Madras. Adding another 7 crore DEDH ISHQIYA has netted 29 crore in two weeks from India and is an average to below-average fare.

The other release of the same week, Divya Khosla Kumar's YAARIYAN is ending it's highly successful run (given the cost and cast) collecting 75 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 30 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.50 lakhs from Surat, 7.65 lakhs from Baroda, 20 lakhs from Pune, 5 lakhs from Nasik, 1 lakh from Goa, 2 lakhs from Belgaum, 85 lakhs from Delhi city, 8 lakhs from Noida, 12 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 8.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 13 lakhs from Lucknow, 4.15 lakhs from Agra, 4.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 7 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.50 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 2 lakhs from Panipat, 6.50 lakhs from Chandigarh, 4.55 lakhs from Jalandhar, 3.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 1.25 lakhs from Bhatinda, 2 lakhs from Jammu, 15 lakhs from Calcutta, 4.50 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.15 lakhs from Darjeeling, 2 lakhs from Dhanbad, 1.50 lakhs from Ranchi, 1.55 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 10.25 lakhs from Nagpur, 7.15 lakhs from Jabalpur, 8 lakhs from Raipur, 15 lakhs from Indore, 2.75 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 3.50 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 3.25 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 4 lakhs from Ajmer, 4.55 lakhs from Kota, 5.55 lakhs from Udaipur, 30 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2.50 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Bangalore, 1 lakh from Mangalore and 1 lakh from Madras. Adding another 8 crore YAARIYAN has netted 38 crore in two weeks from India and is the first success (semi-hit) of 2014.

Concluding perhaps for the last time with Yash Raj Films' Vijay Krishna Acharya directed Aamir, Katrina, Abhishek and Uday starrer, DHOOM 3, the film added another crore and has thus netted 266 crore in five weeks from India and is an all-time blockbuster. The dubbed version(s) have added another 12-13 crore. DHOOM 3 has also shattered all overseas records, grossing $26.50m with ?2,679,000 from UK and $8,071,500 from the US.
